Things to Do in Bowie

The City of Bowie operates several museums within its jurisdiction. The Belair Mansion, the Belair Stable Museum and the Huntington Museum all offer year-round collections and exhibits for local residents. A classic museum located in this city is the National Capital Radio & Television Museum. This spot explores broadcast history from the earliest days of wireless telegraphs to the development of television.

Travel north to Whitemarsh Park to attend plays and other events at the Bowie Playhouse. Home to three resident theater companies, this playhouse provides a range of shows including musicals, British mysteries, slapstick comedy and drama. Prince George’s Stadium is located on Crain Highway and is a multipurpose sports venue primarily used for baseball. It is home to the Baltimore Orioles’ AA affiliate in the Eastern League, the Bowie Baysox.

The arts are a piece of the fabric of life in Bowie. The city maintains art galleries at Bowie City Hall, awards grants to community organizations that provide visual and/or performing arts opportunities for the citizens of Bowie, and sponsors summer concerts at Allen Pond Park and on the Town Green in Old Town Bowie.

The Ice Arena is located on Northview Drive and is a year-round ice skating facility. At this venue, they provide skating camps, skating clubs, hockey clubs, lessons and other activities. Bowie Golf and Country Club is located on the northwestern tip of the city. The city of Bowie is also home to many parks scattered throughout the area. Whitemarsh Park is in the center of the city and offers playgrounds, ball fields and a theater, plus trails for hiking and biking. Some other parks around the area include Allen Pond Park, Jericho Park, Tanglewood Park, Church Road Park and Blacksox Park. There is also a Six Flags America near the southern end of the city.

Transportation Around Bowie

The closest Metro station is New Carrollton, which runs on the Orange and Silver lines. The Metrobus runs from different stops in Bowie and allows easy access to the Metro station and other nearby districts. There is also a MARC train station that is operated by the Maryland Transit Authority, running between Baltimore and Washington, DC. Several major non-highway and highway routes include Route 450, 197, 3, 50, 301 and 214. These roads also intersect with I-97 and I-495.
